Thelma Aoyama

Thelma Aoyama, a singer of Trinidadian and Japanese heritage, was born in Nara Prefecture on October 27, 1987. She released her debut single, “One Way”, on September 5, 2007, and followed it up with “Soba ni Iru Ne” on January 23, 2008. Her second single, sold over 550,000 physical copies and took the number one position on the Oricon sales ranking for the first half of 2008. In addition, it sold over two million digital downloads, landing an entry in the Guinness World Records.
Her debut album, Diary, was released on March 26, 2008, and sold 500,000 copies. On July 9, her third single, “Nando Mo”, was released, selling 250,000 physical copies and, when combined with digital sales, was purchased over two million times. “Mamoritai Mono”, released on November 12, was her fourth single and the first time one of her songs was used as the theme song to a television program. Her fifth single, “Daikirai de mo Arigato”, was written by hugely popular Japanese group Dreams Come True and was released on December 10. She capped off 2008 with an appearance on NHK’s year-end music program, Kohaku Uta Gassen.
On February 11, 2009, Love!: Thelma Love Song Collection, her first compilation album, was released, followed up by her sixth single, “Todoketai…” – which featured a guest appearance from Ken the 390 – on March 11. During these two months, she also embarked on her first solo tour, hitting five major cities in Japan.
Her seventh single, “Wasurenai Yo”, was released on August 5, and was used as the theme for the Japanese version of the movie Hachiko: A Dog’s Story. On September 9, her second album, Emotions, was released. She followed this up with her second national tour, performing at eleven different venues.
Her first single of 2010, “Fall in Love”, is a collaboration with SOL, a member of Korean pop act Big Bang. She followed that up with “Kaeru Basho”, a single written by SoulJa that was featured as the ending theme to the movie Doraemon: Nobita’s Great Battle of the Mermaid King.
