PUSHIM

2011/01/1

The words to describe it when you hear the voice are; “Feel the soul,” “Strong voice!” or “One and only.” That voice belongs to Pushim, born with a voice that enthralls people, who has firmly established herself as the No. 1 singer in the Japanese reggae scene and is viewed as a unique treasure in the Japanese music scene in general.
Born in Osaka, Japan, Pushim started out at dancehall reggae scene in Osaka and quickly gained popularity in the Japanese reggae music scene, which had only begun growing at that point. With “Soulfull Dance,” a collaborative effort with Chozen Lee of Fire Ball, included in the Rankin Taxi-produced compilation album “Bad Bad West” (1997), Pushim caught attention. After her guest appearance with Moomin on his first album, Pushim released in December, 1998, a vinyl single entitled “It’s Too Late,” her rendition of the Carole King masterpiece recorded with Refugee Camp Band (backing band to the Fugees – a popular hiphop group Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean are members of), which immediately sold out. Finally, in June, 1999, Pushim released a first single on a major label, “Brand New Day,” to critical acclaim. By the time Pushim released her first album, “Say Greeting,” in March, 2003, she had already been dubbed “One and Only.” To date, Pushim has released 5 original albums and 3 conceptual albums (see “Discography” for more details), and her third album, “Pieces” (released in March, 2003) became her first Top 10 album, followed by the fourth album entitled “QUEENDOM” entered at 6 on the national album chart. The latest album “Sing A Song… Lighter!” is considered to be her best work with amazing qualities in sound and her mature artistic expressions shown on the album. While spawning her signature tunes such as “Forever,” “a song dedicated” or “I pray,” she continues to evolve as an artist.
Pushim is a phenomenal performer also. She has played as a headliner to most of the outside reggae festivals, and her live performances have also won over fans at festivals of other music genres, which should be evident in two live DVDs entitled “Live Tour 2003 ‘Pieces’ The Final At Shibuya AX” and “Live ‘Queendom’ Tour 2004 Final At Zepp Tokyo.”
Pushim is expanding her career internationally as well, through collaborations with DJ Premier (top producer in the NY hiphop scene), participation in “Sun Fes 2003” (the biggest reggae festival in the world, held in Jamaica) and “As One,” a collaborative effort with a Jamaican superstar Luciano, which garners radio and video airplays in Jamaica. Even, and especially, in Jamaica, a birthplace of reggae, Pushim is highly respected for her recognition and talent through sessions with various top producers, and watched out, with intense curiosity, for what she does next.
Pushim, with a voice like no other, keeps growing as an artist.
